SweetNes Honey Bee Educated - Because Bees are COOL!

Bee EducatedIt’s no secret that children are fascinated with animals and insects. Especially the Honey Bee! Kids learn important life lessons from observing the activities of a honey bee and within a beehive. SweetNes Honey Bee Educated was created to bring awareness and to teach our youth the importance of bees to our ecosystem. We will discuss all about the honey bees, what they do, where they live and why. And even take a look at some LIVE honey bees through our observation hive.

Beekeeping classes in TexasHoney bees are super-important pollinators for flowers, fruits and vegetables. This means that they help other plants grow! Since flowers are rooted in the ground and cannot hug each other, it is the bees duty to transfer pollen between the male and female parts of the flower, allowing plants to grow seeds and bear fruit. Cool huh! According to the National Honey Board, a bee may visit more than two million flowers to gather enough nectar to make just one pound of honey. Thus, bees are associated with hard work and diligence. Actually, they never give up! And, yes, the persistence pays off. The final product from a bees hard work is the sweet honey we all love. Bees rely on the honey they produce to feed the entire colony! That’s about 60,000 mouths to feed! Whoa! That’s a lot of HONEY!

Queen Honey bee surrounded by nurse bees.In the beehive, every bee has a vital job and every bee cooperates. Watching this process unfold gives children a role model for teamwork. Bees are some of the hardest working creatures on the planet, and because of their laborious work ethic, we owe many thanks to this amazing yet often underappreciated insect. Believe it or not, bees are the foundation of the human food chain; in other words – without bees we would not be able to eat. Yes, those buzzing insects that can sometimes appear threatening with their infamous stingers are the backbone of the majority of our food production, from fruits and nuts, to vegetables and flowers. Bees are easily amongst the most important insects to humans on Earth. These humble, buzzing bugs deserve a huge thanks– for helping provide us with our favorite fruits and vegetables, their delicious honey, and beautiful, flowery gardens!

Three different types of bee in a colony. The kids can get up close and personal by observing the honey bees through the observation hive, learning the different types of beekeeping equipment and even donning a beekeeper suit and veil for FUN. One of my favorite lessons is doing the honey bee waggle dances as a way of learning how honey bees communicate.
