What's up with swarming bees?
March 26 2025 – Honey Store
Bee swarming is a natural process in which a new honey bee colony is formed when the queen bee leaves the original colony with a large group of worker bees. This usually occurs when the colony becomes overcrowded, and the bees need to find a new home to thrive.
During swarming, the bees cluster around the queen to protect her while scout bees search for a desirable location for their new hive. Once a suitable site is found, the swarm will move to the new location and establish a new colony. If you encounter a swarm of bees they are probably busy searching for a new home or resting from their journey. They will most likely move on within 24-48 hours, however if they stay longer you can contact a local beekeeper or bee removal service rather than attempting to remove them yourself. Beekeepers can safely remove them without harming the bees or themselves.
Next time you see a swarm of bees, remember that they are simply following their natural instincts to secure the survival of their colony. By understanding and respecting these amazing creatures we can coexist and allow bees to continue their hard work for our ecosystem.
