The beautiful and amazing Honeycomb!
September 25 2024 – Honey Store
Honeycomb is comprised of hollow hexagons made from wax secreted from glands on worker bee abdomens. All the cells are built using one or more sides from existing cells and are attached to the hive frames creating vertical walls in which colonies raise new bees and store pollen and honey.
How Do Bees Make Honeycomb?
Young worker bees eat honey and make wax to build with. They gather the wax and chew them to soften and use this processed wax to build combs. It takes a hive between two weeks and two months to produce the honeycomb needed to store honey necessary to feed the colony through the winter.
We are forever fascinated by these amazing and vital creatures. This is one more reason to love our fuzzy little friends! They are smart, clever and busy bees!
